Summer selections abound, with Riesling and rose wines getting lots of well-deserved attention. On the Riesling front, Laurie Daniel, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports from the first 'Riesling Rendezvous' held at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington. Rose wines are the subject of a fine column in the Washington Post by writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg. And Eric Asimov, in the New York Times, makes a case for Lambrusco wines that won't remind anyone of Aldo Cella's offerings in the disco era. John Gillespie

New York Times: Wine columnist Eric Asimov on Lambrusco wines worth geting to know. Nice mentions for wines from Lini, Tenuta Pederxana, Vittorio Graziano, Francesco Vezzelli, and Saetti.

Business Week: Wine critic Robert Parker on wines from the Kendall-Jackson empire. Top score is given to Verite Le Desir 2004.

Newsday: Staff writer Peter Gianotti on the Castello di Borghese winery in Long Island. Praise for both the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

New York Sun: Wine columnist Peter Hellman on New York restaurants that allow 'BYOB' wines. Nice mentions for a few wines, including Chateau Le Bon Pasteur 1998, and Chateau Montrose 1990.

USA Today: Wine columnist Jerry Shriver recommends Hess Chardonnay 2006, Alice White Lexia 2006, Black Box Chardonnay 2006, and Hardys Stamp of Australia Chardonnay 2006.

Newark Star-Ledger: Wine writer John Foy on Pinot Noir. Cited as a value is Trapiche Pinot Noir 2005.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews Bordeaux varietal wines from Washington State. Lots to like, but highest rating goes to Leonetti Cellar Reserve Walla Walls Valley 2004.

San Francisco Chronicle: Staff writer W. Blake Gray on unusual bargain wines. Recommended are Chateau Benoit Willamette Valley Muller-Thurgau 2005, Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Semillon 2005, Colombelle Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne 2006, Craftsman Neszmely Cserszegi Ruszeres 2006, Craftsman Neszmely Kiralyleanyka 2006, Dry Creek Vineyard Clarksburg Chenin Blanc 2006, Marques de Caceres Rioja 2006, McNab Ridge Niemi Vineyard French Colombard 2005, Simonsig Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2006, and Yard Dog South Eastern Australia 2005.

Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne with more on the controversy surrounding the unlikely outcome of the California State Fair wine competition, with Charles Shaw Chardonnay named the best of all such wines.

San Jose Mercury News: Wine columnist Laurie Daniel on the Riesling revival. Nice comments on many producers, most notably Chateau Ste. Michelle, Dr. Loosen, Chateau Grand Traverse, Standing Stone, Anthony Road, Fox Run, Frankland Estate, Isolation Ridge, Gunderloch, Maximin Grunhaus, and Schloss Johannisberg.

San Diego Union Tribune: Wine columnist Robert Whitley on Beaujolais as an aperitif. Also, high ratings given to Signorello Seta 2005, and Two Hands 'Gnarly Dudes' Shiraz 2005.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on outstanding rose wines. On another page, tasting notes on Belle Glos Pinot Noir Blanc 'Oeil de Perdrix' 2006, Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare 2005, Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rose 2005, and Domaines Ott Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence 2005. Also, a nice note on Edmunds St. John 'Wylie-Fenaughty' Syrah 2001.

Houston Chronicle: Wine columnist Michael Lonsford profiles the Yalumba Winery in Australia. On another page, high praise for several of the wines, especially two viogniers - the Yalumba 2006, and Yalumba 'Eden Valley' 2006.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Wine writer Gil Kulers on old vine Zinfandel. High praise for Plungerhead Old Vine Zinfandel 2005, and nice mention for Pepperwood Grove Old Vine Zin.

Rocky Mountain News: Wine columnist Jennifer Rosen on animals (real ones) and vineyards. Recommended this week are Wild Horse Viognier 2005, Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc 2006, Iron Horse Russian Cuvee 2000, Monkey Bay Rose 2006, Fairview Goats do Roam Rose 2006, Leaping Horse Shiraz 2004, Rocking Horse Merlot Napa Valley 2003, Duck Pond Willamette Pinot Noir 2003, Ravenswood Dickerson Vineyard Zinfandel 2004, and Duckhorn Merlot Napa Valley 2004.

Miami Herald: Wine columnist Fred Tasker on new wines to try. Suggested are Kim Crawford Unoaked Chardonnay 2006, Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 2006, Domaine des Rosiers Moulin-a-Vent 2006, Georges Duboeuf Fleurie 2006, and Mongrana Maremma Toscana 2005.
