Gil Kulers, writing in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, finds much to like touring Paso Robles, especially compared to Napa Valley, which he takes to task for its excesses. In the San Jose Mercury News, columnist Laurie Daniel finds many good value California Chardonnays, while on the other coast, columnists Gaiter and Brecher of the Wall Street Journal are pleased with the Bourgogne Blanc selections they tasted this week. And in the Rocky Mountain News, new columnist Ben Weinberg goes looking for wines to pair with pizza and comes up with some very eclectic choices.  John Gillespie

Washington Times: Wine columnist Paul Lukacs selects Ponzi Vineyards 'Tavola' Pinot Noir 2006.

Los Angeles Times: Wine writer Irene Virbila picks Lini1910 Lambrusco Rosso 2007.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Wine columnist Richard Kinssies selects Muga Rioja Rose 2007.

New York Times: Wine writer Howard Goldberg's under $20 selection is Bodegas Sierra Virgen Airen 2007.

Denver Post: Wine columnist Tara Q. Thomas recommends Simi Roseto 2007.

Dallas Morning News: Wine columnist Rebecca Murphy picks Chateau Gabaron Bordeaux 2005.

New York Times: Wine columnist Eric Asimov on fino and manzanilla Sherries. Top manzanilla is Domecq Sanlucar de Barrameda NV, which is also noted as a value. Top fino choice is Perez Barquero Montilla-Moriles Gran Barquero NV.

Wall Street Journal: Wine columnists Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher on finding value in Bourgogne Blanc wines. Top rating goes to Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils 'Bourgogne Chardonnay' 2006, while Domaine Vincent Bouzereau 'Bourgogne Chardonnay' 2005 is cited for value.

Business Week: Wine critic Robert Parker on Chianti Classico wines of the 2004 vintage. Highest ratings go to Felsina Riserva Rancia, and Fontodi Riserva Vigna del Sorbo.

Bloomberg News Service: Wine columnist Elin McCoy on the growing popularity of rose wines and some off-beat entries, including Croft Pink Port. Others cited inlcude Louis Jadot Beaujolais Rose 2006, Terres Dorees Beaujolais Rose d'Folie 2007, Rose de Domaine de Chevalier 2007, Chateau Lassegue Pink Criquet, SolaRosa, and others.

Newsday: Staff writer Peter Gianotti recommends Long Island wines for summer enjoyment. Offerings from Wolffer Estate, Bedell Cellars, Macari Vineyards, Lieb Family Cellars, Jamesport Vineyards, Medolla Vneyards, Castello di Borghese, and Corey Creek Vineyards are all recommended.

New York Sun: Wine columnist Peter Hellman on a new wine bar in Harlem.

USA Today: Wine columnist Jerry Shriver recommends Queen of Hearts Pinot Noir 2006, and Carmel Road Pinot Noir 2006.

Newark Star-Ledger: Wine writer T.J. Foderaro on white wines for summer enjoyment. The chosen are Loimer 'Lois' Gruner Veltliner 2007, Sagta Torrontes 2007, Nederburg 'Lyric' 2008, Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 2006, Hedges CMS 2006, Dobogo Furmint 2005, Estancia Pinot Grigio 2007, Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2007, and Round Pond Sauvignon Blanc 2006.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Staff writer Craig LaBan on Albarino wines, with recommendations for those from Burgans, Bouza, and Bonny Doon.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews Chenin Blanc wines from the Loire Valley. Higest rated are Huet Clos du Bourg Vouvray Sec 2005, Domaine Deletang Les Batisses Montlouis Sur Loire Demi-Sec 2005, and Domaine Aux Moines Roche Aux Moines Savennieres 2004.

San Francisco Chronicle: Staff writer Janet Fletcher on sommeliers who make wine. Focus is on Emmanuel Kemiji, John Lancaster, and Rajat Parr.

Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne on the results of the California State Fair Wine Competition. All the category winners are listed, with a special nod to a few, including Fox Brook Winery White Zinfandel 2007 and a number of other low-price wines. Sacramento area wineries winning awards are also listed.

San Jose Mercury News: Wine columnist Laurie Daniel on California Chardonnay wines. High alcohol trend is taken to task, but Daniel finds much to like in new offerings from Jordan, Bearboat, Dry Creek Vineyard, Sanford, Taz, Wild Horse, Testarossa, Handley Cellars, Chateau St. Jean, Stony Hill, and Mayacamas Vineyards. Nice comments, too for French entries from Domaine Larouch and Joseph Drouhin. For bargain Chardonnays, the suggestions are for those of Barossa Valley Estate, Sonoma Vineyards, Lockwood, Estancia, A by Acacia, and Morgan.

Los Angeles Times: Guest writer Patrick Comiskey on wines of Greece. Focus is on grape varieties, but nice mentions for wines from Boutari, Tselepos, and Kir-Yianni.

San Diego Union Tribune: Wine columnist Robert Whitley on the wines of Merry Edwards, Joseph Phelps, and Bonny Doon. Tasting notes and high recommendations for a number of wines from each, with highest score going to Merry Edwards 'Coopersmith' Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2005.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on the movie "Bottle Shock" and some of the Napa Valley wines involved. Karen's pick this week is Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 2005 (and 2006), while Andrew favors Grgich Hills Napa Valley Chardonnay 2005. Nice mention also for Gustavo Thrace Carneros Chardonnay 2004.

Houston Chronicle: Wine columnist Dale Robertson on Domaine de Mourchon in the Cotes du Rhone. Texas ties are explored, with nice comments for several of the wines. Also, local importer recommends Hopler Gruner Veltliner 2007.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Wine writer Gil Kulers on the wineries of Paso Roble s. Lots of praise for the people and their wines, with recommendations for Peachy Canyon Cirque du Vin 2005, Paso Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Norman Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2003, and Justin Vineyards Isosceles 2004.

Arizona Republic: Wine columnist Mark Tarbell reports from the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition. Countless winners listed, including top wine of all - Armida Winery Maple Vineyards Zinfandel.

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Wine writer Bill Ward on wines from Hungary. Featured is Szeremley Badasconyi Pinot Gris 2003.

Dallas Morning News: Wine writer Kim Pierce on the wines of Rutz Cellars, with a special note on the Bacigalupi Vineyard Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2005.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram: Wine writer Jeff Siegel on low priced wines. Recommended are Barefoot Cellars Pinot Grigio NV, Oak Leaf Chardonnay NV, Rene Barbier Mediterranean White NV, Lorval Pinot Noir 2006, Nathanson Creek Cabernet Sauvignon NV, and Black Swan Shiraz Merlot 2006.

Rocky Mountain News: Wine columnist Ben Weinberg on wines with pizza. Whites recommended are Fleur Carneros Chardonnay 2005, Shoofly Buzzcut White 2007, Terredora di Paolo Greco di Tufo 2006, and Sterling Sauvignon Blanc 2006. Reds suggested are Rosenblum Syrah Vintners Cuvee 2005, Gran Familia Rioja Rose 2005, Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti 2006, and Terredora Aglianico 2006. Also recommended are Nicolas Feuillatte Brut NV, and Felsina Vin Santo 1999.

Sarasota Herald-Tribune: Wine columnist Dan Berger has nice comments for recent wine releases from Clos du Bois and Wolf Blass.

Miami Herald: Wine columnist Fred Tasker on wines to take on picnics. Highest recommendations are for Laboure-Roi Pouilly Fuisse 2005, Mommessin Beaujolais Villages 2005, and Veuve Clicquot Brut NV.

Nashville Tennessean: Wine columnist Frank Sutherland on wines from Sonoma County. Top choice is Angeline Chardonnay 2006.

The Oregonian: Wine columnist Matt Kramer on wines that have greatly improved. Examples are Carpano Antica Formula Red Vermouth, and Domaine Ott Cotes de Provence Rose 2007.
