Napa, Calif.—A collaborative experiment by Monica Cooper, Ph. D. and Sarah MacDonald, Ph.D. is the winner of the 2015 innovation award sponsored by Fruition Sciences and Bank of the West. Cooper is the University of California Cooperative Extension advisor for Napa County and MacDonald is the owner of Envision Geo. Cooper and MacDonald's experiment presented a new way to manage grapevine leafroll disease. Their project and results were presented at Fruition Sciences' 2015 Vintage Report Conference in Napa. Cooper and MacDonaled’s experiment entailed hyperspectral airborne imaging to identify diseased vines. The approach collected data from thousands of acres of vines in a single three-hour flight and could make the laborious task of identifying vines with red blotch disease much easier and quicker.
