The Los Angeles Times lost both food editor Leslie Brenner and wine reproter Corie Brown - two outstanding professionals. There will be less focus on wine at the LAT, but guest writer Jean Barrett offers a nice piece this week on Italian wines with antipasto. On the other coast, Washington Post wine writers Page and Dornenburg offer some insights on evolving styles of Chardonnay. And Gil Kulers, writing in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, profiles vintner Joel Peterson, and his Ravenswood wines.  John Gillespie

Cleveland Plain Dealer: Staff writer Donald Rosenberg picks Marquis Philips Roogle Riesling 2007.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Wine columnist Richard Kinssies selects Chehalem Inox Willamette Valley Chardonnay 2007.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Wine columnist Bob Hosmon picks Yarden Pinot Noir 2003.

New York Times: Wine writer Howard Goldberg's under $20 selection is Swedish Hill Winery Vidal Blanc 2007.

Philadelphia Inquirer: Staff writer Craig LaBan suggests 'Les Sinards' Chateauneuf du Pape 2004.

New York Times: Wine columnist Eric Asimov on wines from the Cotes du Rhone. Lots of nice things to say for the group, but top choice is Domaine le Garrigon 2006.

Wall Street Journal: Wine columnists Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher offer cautionary notes on Shiraz wines in the $20 and over price range. Lots of praise, though, for Dead Letter Office 2005.

Bloomberg News Service: Wine columnist Elin McCoy on the need for lighter weight wine bottles and the trend toward unoaked Chardonnay. Nice mentions for producers Vina Carmen and Siduri for moving to lighter bottles. Also, nice comments for unoaked Chardonnay wines from Morgan and Chehalem.

Newark Star-Ledger: Wine writer T.J. Foderaro on Teroldego wines from Italy. Nice comments on offerings from Foradori and Bottega Vinaia.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews Pinot Gris wines from Oregon. Highest rating goes to Firesteed 2007.

Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne on handling and opening older bottles of wine. Along the way, nice mention for Grange Hermitage.

San Jose Mercury News: Wine columnist Laurie Daniel on Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Western Australia. Producers praised are Leeuwin Estate, Vasse Felix, Cullen Wines, Howard Park, Juniper Estate, Watershed, Cape Mentelle, Wildberry Estate, and Ring Bolt.

Los Angeles Times: Guest writer Jean Barrett on Italian wines to serve with antipasto. Choices include Rustico Prosecco, Regaleali IGT Sicilia White 2007, Alois Lageder Pinot Bianco 2007, Azienda Agricola Martilde 'Piume' Malavasia 2006, Pio Cesare Cortese di Gavi 2007, Jermann Vinnae 2007, Tenuta Pederzana Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro 2007, and Puianello Contrada Boroleto Labrusco Reggiano.

San Diego Union Tribune: Wine columnist Robert Whitley on good value wines. Cases in point are Hess Alomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Veramonte Primus, Five Rivers Cabernet Sauvignon, and Ponzi 'Tavola' Pinot Noir 2006. Also, a very high rating is given to Shafer 'One Point Five' Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on the evolution of Chardonnay styles. Nice comments for offerings from Joseph Drouhin, Kali Hart, Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Kumeu River Estate, Robert Mondavi, Iron Horse, and Wolffer Estate. Karen's top choice, however, is Domaine Laroche Saint Martin Chablis 2005 (and 2006), while Andrew favors Edna Valley Paragon Chardonnay 2006.

Houston Chronicle: Wine columnist Dale Robertson on the movie Bottle Shock. Also, recommendation from local Houston wine expert of Chateau Saint-Andred-Corbin 2005.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Wine writer Gil Kulers on vintner Joel Peterson and his defense of high alcohol wines. Praise for the Ravenswood Old Hill Zinfandel 2006, and Dickerson Zinfandel 2006.

Arizona Republic: Wine columnist Mark Tarbell offers tasting notes on wine finds from a local Safeway store. Highest rated are Decoy Red 2006, and Miner 'Simpson Vineyard' Viognier 2006.

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Wine writer Bill Ward on rose wines for summer enjoyment. Nice mentions for Saint Baillon, Pique Roque, Chateau Font du Broc les Selves, Commanderie de la Bargemone, Chateau d'Esclans, Evesham Wood, Elk Cove, Muga, Marques de Caceres, and Montes. Favored example, though, is Robert Hall Rose de Robles 2007.

Rocky Mountain News: Wine columnist Ben Weinberg offers a wine personality quiz this week. Along the way, nice mentions for Stonestreet Chardonnay, Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva, Christine Andrew Rose of Malbec, Beaulieu Vineyard Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, Frog's Leap Petite Sirah, Paso a Paso Tempranillo, Brassfield Serenity White, and Louis Michel Chablis Montmain.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Wine writer Bob Hosmon on kosher wines. Recommended are Hagafen Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Baron Herzog Zinfandel, Weinstock Cabernet Sauvignon, Recanati Chardonnay, Recanati Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Yarden Syrah, and Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon.

Miami Herald: Wine columnist Fred Tasker on wines to enjoy in magnum bottles. Dozens recommended, including multiple offerings from Woodbridge and Vendange.

Chicago Tribune: Wine reporter Bill Daley on the pleasures of Pinot Blanc. Tasting notes on offerings from Jean Ginglinger, Lucien Albrecht, Trimbach, Domaine Bruno Sorg, Marcel Deiss, Albert Mann, and Albert Boxler.
