Sparkling wine selections overflow in numerous columns this week, with much attention paid to those from unusual sources. Best examples are the selections of columnists Gaiter and Brecher at the Wall Street Journal, and the San Francisco Chronicle, where wine editor Jon Bonne takes a detailed look at sparkling wines from every corner of the globe while the tasting panel lauds offereings from Roederer Estate and Bollinger. And at Bloomberg News, columnist Elin McCoy pens a fine profile of Bordeaux vintner Christian Moueix, with a focus on his affordable wines.  John Gillespie

USA Today: Wine columnist Jerry Shriver recommends McWilliams's Hanwood Estate Merlot 2006, Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Pinot Noir 2006, and Cartlidge & Browne Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.

Boston Globe: Wine columnist Stephen Meuse on wines for holiday entertaining. Recommended are Domaine du Tariquet Chenin Chardonnay Cotes de Gascogne 2006, Chapoutier 'Belleruche' Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2006, Punto Fina Perdriel Malbec 2006, Graham Beck Robertson Chardonnay 2005, and Cusumano Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2006.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews Brut Champagnes and domistic sparkling wines. Highest ratings go to Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Anderson Valley Brut 2000, Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut NV, and Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV.

San Francisco Chronicle: Wine editor Jon Bonne offers a very comprehensive guide to sparking wines from every significant prodcuing area around the globe. Tasting notes on offerings from Boslita, Caves Carod Freres, Francois Pinon, Gran Sarao, Jansz, Point Reyes Vineyards, Renardat-Fache, Solter, Steininger, Taltarni, and Andre & Mireille Tissot.

Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne on the history of wine production in California. Cautionary note on trend toward higher alcohol. Also, tasting notes on a number of Bordeaux wines, including nice comments for Chateau Ducla 2005, Chateau Trimoulet Saint Emilion 2003, and Chateau Siran Margaux 1999.

San Jose Mercury News: Wine columnist Laurie Daniel on wine gadgets. Less than stellar comments on a 'breathable' wine glass and the Vinturi, which is supposed to aerate wine as it is poured.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on wines for holiday entertaining. On another page, tasting notes on De Bortoli dB Selection Chardonnay 2006, Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut NV, Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet Merlot 2005, Pacific Rim Chenin Blanc 2006, De Bortoli dB Selection Merlot 2006, Domaine du Tariquet Sauvignon 2006, and Banrock Station Chardonnay 2006.

Houston Chronicle: Wine columnist Michael Lonsford on the Merlot competition at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Wine Competition. On another page, tasting notes on medal winners, the best of which is deemed to be Rutherford Ranch 2004.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Wine writer Gil Kulers on glassware for gift-giving.

Arizona Republic: Wine columnist Mark Tarbell offers tasting notes on wines for holiday enjoyment. Highest rated is Domaine Carneros 2003.

Dallas Morning News: Contributor Tina Danze reports on the paper's tasting panel recommendations of holiday wines. Wines cited are D'Arenberg Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2005, Domaine Carneros Brut 2004, Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Ridge Barossa Shiraz 2006, Warre's Otima 10 Year Tawny Port, Flowers Vineyard & Winery Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2005, Delamotte Brut NV, Chateau Grand Corbin St. Emilion 2001, Chateau Beauchene Chateauneuf-du-Pape Grande Reserve 2004, and Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume 2005.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Wine writer Bob Hosmon on wines for the holidays. Suggested Australian wines are Alice White Cabernet Sauvignon (and Chardonnay), Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet (and Riesling), Greg Norman Estates Limestone Coast Shiraz, and Rosemount Diamond Label Traminer Riesling. From Argentina, the suggestions are Trapiche Malbec, Bodegas Norton Malbec Reserva, and Bodega Catena Malbec. Chilean wines recommended are Vina Montes Malbec, Vina Santa Rita Carmenere, and Casa Lapostolle Chardonnay.
