Eastern Winery Exposition to Open Registration

Seventh annual conference to be held in Pennsylvania, coincide with License to Steal

Lancaster, Pa.—The Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE) will return to the Lancaster County Convention Center for its seventh annual wine and grape trade show and conference from March 6 to March 8, 2018.

Registration for the conference will open Nov. 2, and those who register early will receive the best pricing. Members of 29 supporting sponsor wine associations, wine trails and other wine groups are eligible for discounts. Hotel room blocks for EWE at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square also will open Nov. 2. Additional hotels with EWE room blocks include The Hotel Lancaster (located two blocks from the Convention Center), the Cork Factory Hotel, the Eden Resort and the Lancaster Arts Hotel.

EWE, the largest production wine and grape trade show and conference east of the Pacific coast states, will feature 37 speakers, 40 workshop and conference sessions, tastings, networking and social events, and a trade show with 190 booths. For the second year, EWE is partnering with the License to Steal (LTS) conference produced by the Ohio Wine Producers Association. LTS features sessions on the promotion, marketing and sales of regional wines and is oriented toward anyone who is involved with wine sales: owners, general managers, tasting room personnel and tourism professionals.

Two day-long workshops will take place March 6. The Sparkling Wine Workshop will look first at the world sparkling wine market and current trends in the wine type. Three East Coast traditional method sparkling winemakers—Eric Baumann of Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery in New York, Jerry Forest of Buckingham Valley Vineyards in Pennsylvania, and Gilles Martin of Sparkling Pointe Vineyard in Long Island, N.Y.—will present two sessions about processing grapes for traditional method sparkling wines. They will look at grape varieties and ratios, harvest parameters, press time and pressure, free run vs. press wine, yeasts, primary and malolactic fermentation time and temperatures. The second session will focus on secondary fermentation in the bottle, time en tirage, blending, dosage and other finishing steps in producing sparkling wine.

Another sparkling wine session will focus on other ways of producing those wines. Lisa Hinton, winemaker at Old Westminster Winery in Maryland, and Maya Hood White, vineyard manager and enologist at Early Mountain Vineyard in Virginia, will explain the process they use in producing pétillant naturel wines (also known as pét-nat sparkling wines) which includes bottling the wine before the primary fermentation is completed. Tim Benedict, winemaker at Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards in N.Y. will discuss the process of making forced-carbonation sparkling wines

The second workshop, “Managing Microbes,” will be presented by Eglantine Chauffour, technical winemaker at Enartis USA, and Dr. Molly Kelly, extension enologist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. They will review the major spoilage microbes that affect wine, how they grow, how winemakers can detect microbes in wine and then control that growth during the winemaking process. Two sensory-evaluation sessions (olfactory only) will guide participants through associating wine flaws and off-flavors with spoilage-microbe development and evaluating flawed wines based on microbes interacting with oxygen.

The two-day EWE conference program happening March 7 and 8 will include multiple sessions from three tracks: enology, viticulture and money/marketing/management. At some sessions, winemakers will pour samples of their wines to illustrate their talks.

The License to Steal wine marketing conference also will take place on those two days. Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, chairs the LTS conference, which received its name because attendees are encouraged to “steal” any good ideas they hear. Two of the LTS sessions are a collaboration between the two conferences, and both EWE and LTS attendees may select either or both of those sessions as part of their EWE or LTS registrations. Monika Elling, CEO of Foundations Marketing Group, author of the book Wine 123 and a leader in the utilization of social and digital media, will speak on “Brand Strategies,” focusing on the concept of consumer-centric marketing essential for brand traction, growth and longevity. Jay Donovan, a freelance writer who keeps readers informed about innovations and marketplace changes in the technology arena, will discuss augmented reality and artificial intelligence opportunities for the wine and grape industry.
