The new WineScan Flex and WineScan S02 models of the Foss WineScan machine come with ready-to-use parameters for multiple wine analyses. The WineScan employs Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technology to scan a liquid sample and provide free and total sulfur dioxide results in a little more than a minute. Other tests include Brix, yeast assimilable nitrogen and volatile acidity.
Heyes Filters is now offering retrofit membranes for Pall cross flow modules built by Koch Membrane Systems (KMS). The membranes are manufactured in the United States and available from stock on the West Coast. Heyes reports the open membrane structure preserves wine character while the membrane’s asymmetric pore structure keeps it clean during filter cycles.
 Mythos pneumatic presses by German supplier M.A.S. are now available in the United States through P&L Specialties. The presses feature vertical, stainless steel juice channels and a large lid that runs nearly the entire length of the press chamber, making it easy to ensure the press is filled uniformly.
Velo-Acciai’s new lees filter, which won a new technology award at the recent SIMEI expo in Milan, Italy, is now available in the United States through Scott Laboratories. The filter is a cross flow system that can separate juice or wine from up to 60% solids by employing a special vibratory bowl and sintered stainless steel modules with a high degree of resistance to thermal shock.
Researchers at the University of Adelaide have developed a new app to help growers assess powdery mildew on grapes. According to a product description by the university, the PMapp is designed to enable a user to quickly assess the severity of powdery mildew on each bunch of grapes by matching it with a computer-generated image.
