Sonoma, Calif.—Richard Kunde, a member of one of Sonoma Valley’s most prominent ranching families, died Jan. 18 in Santa Rosa, Calif., at the age of 75. The youngest of five children, Kunde grew up on the Sonoma Valley ranch his grandfathered purchased in 1904. Kunde, a resident of Windsor, Calif., would go own to own and operate Sonoma Grapevines that grew into one of the largest nurseries in the United States producing up to 14 million vines a year. Kunde and his wife Saralee, who preceded him in death in 2014, also built and donated the $3 million Saralee and Richard’s Barn at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The couple’s home has also been turned into a popular event space for community fundraisers known as Richard’s Grove and Saralee’s Vineyard. Kunde is survived by his son, daughter and granddaughter.
