Davis. Calif.—University of California, Davis Prof. Emeritus Vernon Singleton died Aug. 26 surrounded by his wife of 69 years and children. UC Davis and the Singleton family will host a celebration of Singleton’s life on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the UC Davis Conference Center at 550 Alumni Lane in Davis.

Singleton retired in 1991, but consulted for years afterward and published the occasional research paper. An expert in wine and plant phenolics, Singleton was honored by the American Society for Enology and Viticulture, ASEV, in 2008 with a full-day symposium that followed the Unified Grape & Wine Symposium in Sacramento, Calif. The event included presentations by eight experts in phenolics discussing research that was inspired by, or directly related to Singleton’s work.

Singleton was inducted in to the Vintners hall of Fame in 2011 for his four decades of teaching at UC Davis and for publishing more than 220 papers and four books.

All are welcome to attend the celebration of Singleton’s life but UC Davis asks those interested in attending to register at ucanr.edu. The department is also hoping to collect stories, photos and videos of Singleton to share with his family during and after the program. Materials can be emailed to venchair@ucdavis.edu.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Yolo Hospice, or to the Vernon Singleton Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis.
